Helping Children with Alopecia Areata

I was told a story by a parent that still makes me cry. The child had Alopecia Areata and wore a synthetic wig to school. All of the kids teased her unmercifully. One afternoon as she boarded the school bus, the class bully pulled the wig off her head and passed it to the back of the bus. Every child tried it on. When it finally got back to her it was a mess. She put it back on her head with tears falling from her eyes didn't say a word. She never returned to that school. How this experience affected this child's self esteem could depend heavily on the type of family she came from. It seems to me that families come in 2 types: very supportive or not supportive at all.

Unsafe Treatments for Menopause Symptoms

Menopause is not a disease. It's a period in every woman's life when her body changes. Symptoms are seen in many cases and have to be treated. For many years the treatment of these symptoms was replacing female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, called hormone therapy. Treatment must contain both of these hormones because otherwise unwanted risks appear. An estrogen treatment increases the risks of uterine cancer and that's why progesterone is used. Progesterone has the capacity of restoring libido, and strengthens bones but especially reduces the risk of uterine cancer and stops estrogen to cause it. A single estrogen therapy is recommended only for women with their uterus removed.

Urinary Tract Infections - Danger for Whom?

The risks of a urinary tract infection (UTI) are different from one person to another. For example people with urinary problems caused by a kidney stone or enlarged prostate have higher chances of getting a urinary tract infection. There are many possibilities to catch an infection, but most exposed are people that use catheters or tubes placed in the urinary system, more exactly in the urethra and bladder. That's why the catheter should be removed as quickly as possible and should be kept clean. Also exposed to the infection are the diabetics because of the weakness of their immune system, but not only them. Children born with urinary problems are also exposed just like the women that use diaphragm.

Tips on recognizing sinus infections

In the air there are numerous bacteria and when breathing we inhale them. If the cilia filter is malfunctioning, these bacteria can get blocked in the sinus cavities and produce an infection. Therefore we must know how to recognize this type of infection in order to treat it well. Some general symptoms of sinus infection are: headaches, fatigue, facial and upper jaw pains, and tenderness of the sinus area, sore throat, cough, colored nasal drainage, bad breath and swollen eye lids. There are different types of sinus and the symptoms might differ when each one is affected; the symptoms differ also for acute and chronic sinusitis. Frontal acute sinusitis brings fever, forehead pain, nasal discharge or postnasal drip.

How To Boost Your Metabolism

Whether you've heard this before or not, it's important to repeat: Boosting your metabolism will help you lose weight. In fact, it's one of the best ways to burn off extra fat from just about anywhere in your body. Some people are born with high metabolisms and some struggle with low ones. Regardless of what you started with though, there are several ways you can increase your metabolism... and most of them are quite easy. 1. Change how you eat. Your body uses energy to eat, digest, and use the foods you put into it. So if you give it something it has to work on, it will naturally use more energy in doing so. Feeding yourself simple sugars makes the body lazy.

That Thing Called Acne

Acne can be a small problem for some people and big problems for others. Yet, there are some who will never know what it feels like to have an acne problem. So what exactly is acne anyway? To put it simply, acne happens when the oil that is secreted by our skin gets all bottled up on its way to the skins surface. This oil is a natural thing that our body produces around about the time of puberty to protect our skin. Secreted from the sebaceous gland, this oil makes its way to the skin surface to provide us with a layer that keeps harmful things on the outside and moisture on the inside. Without this oil, our skin would be left high and dry and would start to flake away.

You Must Change Your Mind So You Can Fix Your Back Pain

I have tonsilitis right now. Not a big deal. I usually get tonsilitis once every two years. Besides my inflamed tonsils, I have no other signs or symptoms. I use herbal green tea with honey and lemon to treat my tonsils and throat. Reluctantly, I will probaby go to the doctor today or tomorrow to get an antibiotic for it assuming it is bacterial in origin. A good antibiotic should clear it up quickly until the next time of course. Many people including doctors treat back pain the same way. Doctors give patients painkillers in the form of shots or drugs and send them on their way until that nagging back pain creeps up again. This may offer temporary or short-term relief for the patient but ultimately it leads to a revolving door effect that clogs up doctor offices, increases patient costs and offers no real long-term solution for back pain sufferers.

Is There A Hair Loss Remedy?

The loss of hair is caused by a variety of reasons. While it is true that hair loss is part of the natural process of the growth and development of the scalp area, as well as the cells underlying it, abnormal cases may occur that fall outside of what is considered to be "normal". It is these abnormal losses of hair that cause a great many people to search for a hair loss remedy. What Causes Hair Loss? Simply stated, hormones cause natural hair loss. It's a fact that we lose more than a hundred strands of hair per day without our knowledge. While we shed a considerable amount of hair daily, it is later replaced by a new growth of young, vibrant, shiny hair.
